We visit an area on our Great Ocean Road day trip where the local koalas are particularly abundant, ensuring excellent koala viewing while enjoying a stroll amongst the sweetly-scented eucalyptus forest.
We’ll also meet some of our favourite feathered friends, as numerous colourful local parrots call the Great Otway National Park home. Our tour’s lunch stop is at the foot of the Otway Ranges in the beautiful town of Apollo Bay, Australia. Select from the town’s many cafes, explore the shops and the marina.
Post lunch, take a stroll in the Great Otway National Park. Then, of course, it’s onwards to the Port Campbell National Park, where you’ll be awestruck by the world-famous rock formations including of course the 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, as well as Gibsons Steps, for an opportunity to view two of the famous limestone stacks from sea level. Then continue your journey through suburbs on the way to the award-winning Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park for a unique Australian wildlife experience. Here, we’ll enjoy a guided wildlife walk and learn about iconic species such as kangaroos, koalas, emus & wallabies. Included in your visit is the spectacular “Conservation in Action” wildlife show, which showcases a number of lesser-known Australian species.
Continuing on to Phillip Island itself, a visit to Point Grant and The Nobbies gives us an opportunity to enjoy views over Westernport Bay and the Bass Strait, including Seal Rocks, home to Australia’s largest population of fur seals. Then we’ll reach – the main event – where just after dark the world’s smallest penguins parade ashore after spending the day fishing out at sea. You’ll be truly enchanted as the stars of the show emerge from the surf and pass right before your eyes on their journey back to their homes. Your tour guide will assist in ensuring you are able to get the best possible vantage point to enjoy the famous Penguin Parade. The penguins’ familiar “huk huk” call is heard and they magically appear on the water’s edge. The penguins stand in the shallows, sometimes retreat into the sea if they sense danger, regain confidence and again come to the beach. They usually regroup, sometimes numbering over 100 birds, and make their way up the beach to the dunes. Return time varies as per seasonal sunset time and can be from 21.00 to midnight.
